Four Lanes Are More than Enough (FLAME)
FLAME is a local Runnymede-based transport pressure group that was set up back in 1992 to fight government plans to expand the M25 motorway, which was such a big issue back then.
In late 2025, there is interest in reviving this or starting something similar, given the renewed interest in Heathrow expansion. We want to be sure that Egham Residents’ interests are taken into account - in particular with reference to transport infrastructure impact in the area.
It is envisaged that there will be residents who support Heathrow expansion for its employment and economic impacts in the area as well as residents who oppose it, so as an organization we will need to plot a careful path forward but there will certainly be impacts that most if not all residents have similar opinions on.
Ideas for how to use Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding
In early 2025, the Chair, Willy Burgess requested ideas from the members and used the results as the basis for a list of ‘categorised ideas’ to the council using headings they had previously referred to. This hopefully helps the Council quickly understand why suggestions were considered relevant.

20 mile an hour speed limit
Should we change the speed limits in Egham and if so, on all roads or just some?
For an example of the sort of thing we might want, see the Common Place “Egham Hythe Local Street Improvements: Have your say” - in particular 20mph speed limit proposals
- There is significant evidence that fewer people get injured or die
- They also make for a much more pleasant town centre and residential road experience for people on foot
- They save money, both for society as a whole (less pressure on hospitals, police and others) but also for motorists - see Guardian article - “UK’s 20mph speed limits ‘are cutting car insurance costs’”. From the article:
“the car insurer esure reported that vehicle damage claims in Wales fell by a fifth after the default limit was introduced”
